En lenguaje más simple, la agrosilvicultura es la producción de árboles y cultivos no arbóreos o animales en la misma parcela de tierra. Los cultivos se pueden cultivar juntos al mismo tiempo, en rotación o, incluso, se pueden cultivar en parcelas separadas cuando los materiales de uno se utilizan para beneficiar al otro. Sin embargo, esta simple definición no tiene en cuenta los conceptos integrados asociados con la agrosilvicultura por los cuales este sistema de manejo de la tierra es, posiblemente, el más autosustentable y ecológicamente racional entre los demás sistemas agrícolas. Por lo tanto, una segunda definición de agrosilvicultura sería la integración de árboles, plantas y animales en sistemas productivos conservadores a largo plazo.

La agrosilvicultura se puede considerar más como un enfoque que como una tecnología única y terminada. Aunque se han ideado y probado varios sistemas terminados, dicha tecnología puede requerir ajustes para situaciones específicas. La flexibilidad del enfoque de la agrosilvicultura es una de sus ventajas.
