Les animaux domestiques producteurs d'aliments dans le monde sont deux fois plus nombreux que la population humaine. Il existe des milliers d'espèces animales dans le monde, mais seules quelques-unes ont été domestiquées avec succès de façon permanente et aucune au cours des 2000 dernières années. En fait, cinq espèces (bovins, moutons, chèvres, poulets et porcs) représentent plus de 95 % des animaux d'élevage du monde ' et les cinq espèces se trouvent toutes dans les basses terres (zones de plaines) tropicales humides.
