Seed Banking / Creating a Seed Bank
Seeds naturally have a place in almost any endeavor having to do with agricultural development. Distributing improperly stored seeds that germinate poorly exposes farmers and communities to the risk of crop failure. Smallholder farmers have the opportunity to produce, save, and share seeds that are affordable and accessible to all. Seed banking at the community level encourages the retention of valuable indigenous crop varieties and preserves genetic biodiversity. ECHO's resources and training focus on appropriate seed banking technologies include
- seed bank structures
- keeping seeds dry and cool
- vacuum sealing options
- data management
- community-level seed banking
- seed viability testing
Seed saving and banking in the tropics are subjects in which ECHO staff are constantly being innovative and researching. This collection focuses on the knowledge and systems useful in developing seed storage and distribution capacity. If you are interested in the process of growing out plants for saving seed, please see our seed saving collection.
