A nivel mundial, las mujeres están muy involucradas en la agricultura; según algunas estimaciones, realizan más de la mitad del trabajo que implica la agricultura. A pesar de ello, no reciben una cantidad proporcional de extensión y ayudas adicionales; tampoco reciben beneficios proporcionales a su trabajo. Según el Estado de la agricultura y la alimentación 2011 de la FAO,“ si las mujeres tuvieran el mismo acceso a los recursos productivos que los hombres, podrían aumentar los rendimientos en sus fincas entre un 20 % y un 30 %. Esto podría aumentar la producción agrícola total en los países en desarrollo entre un 2,5 % y un 4 %, lo que a su vez podría reducir el número de personas que padecen hambre en el mundo al [sacar] del hambre a 150 millones de personas.”
