Lablab purpureus puede crecer en un amplio rango de condiciones climáticas y tipos de suelo, dependiendo de la variedad elegida. Se cultiva ampliamente en todos los trópicos y subtrópicos y ocurre de manera silvestre en el África tropical (incluyendo Madagascar) e India.  La palatabilidad del lablab sobrepasa la del frijol terciopelo o del frijol de espada (judía sable).

Highworth

This variety was introduced to Australia from Southern India and was selected for early flowering, high seed yield, and high dry matter production. It has purple flowers and black seeds that are borne in non-shattering pods.
