Greetings!..You are cordially invited to join us in this important meeting for learning and sharing best practices of Sustainable Agriculture and Appropriate Technologies.
We will be sharing best practices promoted by different specialists from across the region. It will be an opportunity to network among those working in East and Southern Africa to alleviate poverty, fight against hunger, and improve food security and the overall livelihood of the people we serve.
Presenters welcome: We seek qualified speakers and we are contacting you to offer yourself, or to suggest to us others to share best practices in their work. ECHO EA and Canadian Foodgrains Bank seek speakers whose themes have wide relevance for impacting food security. Both morning plenaries and practical afternoon breakout sessions or panels are sought for poster presentations.
Please join us to find good speakers for this event. We encourage potential speakers to submit the attached speaker form so that we can save their place in the schedule. The format requests 3 sentences of biographical data, a photo, a theme title, and a 3 sentence summary of the presentation.
We hope you will encourage your colleagues and partners in other organizations to attend, and even to offer presentations. Poster Guidelines
Theme: Best Practices in Sustainable Agriculture and Appropriate Technologies
Background
ECHO East Africa and Canadian Foodgrains Bank are jointly convening a Symposium at the Linde Hotel in Mponela, Dowa (north of Lilongwe), Malawi, on Best Practices in Sustainable Agriculture and Appropriate Technologies on the dates 20th – 22nd August, 2024 with a participant goal of 120+ participants. This event will enable three days of sharing by presentations, some practical sessions, an appropriate technology fair, and last day field trips. The Symposium objectives: to share themes/best practices. This event has been stimulated by witnessing a typical myriad of NGOs working in isolation alongside others doing very good work.
ECHO EA and Canadian Foodgrains Bank welcome posters from any participants who would like to present on themes relevant to best practices. They should support or augment the Symposium themes such as the examples listed below, or any relevant themes. Relevant themes are not limited to the following examples – share what is relevant.
General themes: Agroecology, climate smart practices, conservation agriculture, garden techniques in drylands; Nutrition improvement; a Biblical basis to working in communities; reconciliation/peace-making; reducing post- harvest losses; gender, women and girls’ issues.
Emergency guidelines: Best practices in offering relief during times of drought or floods.
Livestock-base themes: animal health services, establishing & improving livestock markets; rural poultry systems & Newcastle disease vaccination; East Coast Fever/Corridor Disease immunization; Ethno-veterinary medicine solutions
Land use, and range-based themes: Holistic management experiences; community natural resource management plans; conservation agriculture in drylands; farmer managed natural regeneration – FMNR; small kitchen gardens
Water-based themes: Water storage by sand dams; water filters; water purification with Moringa seeds; water harvesting at household or community level
Seed and agro-input systems themes: farmer-saved seeds, community seed banks, inputs value chains, transitioning from input aid to market-oriented agro-input systems, seed multiplication options, quality issues, last-mile agro-dealer and seed companies models
Access to finance themes: post-conflict opportunities and challenges, formal and informal institutions, current status, (banks, cooperatives, SACCOs, MFIs, VSLA)
Food processing and value addition: current status (challenges, opportunities, cottage industry, appropriate technologies, food safety and quality,
Desired of those displaying posters:
- Photos & graphs are preferable to excessive text.
- Text should be large enough font to be visible from 2 meters.
- Please include captions to describe photos and graphs.
- Use the English language
- Consult ECHO EA or Canadian Foodgrains Bank staff before setting up your poster on 19th August 2024 or thereafter.
- Be prepared to attend and answer questions at the scheduled poster mini-sessions after lunch on days 2 and 3

We are also happy to announce that we will be offering 20 women participants a waiver / scholarship to attend the event for free based on merit as coming from organizations or situations unable to pay. Spread the news!
*An additional $20 fee for transport and lunch Post-symposium tours may be arranged to agricultural demonstration sites of interest. This will be within an hour's drive from the venue, on the day after the symposium closes for those who can stay.
