Many species introduced into new environments are unable to survive in their new surroundings. However, a percentage of these species are able to expand the area they infest and negatively impact the economy, human health or ecology of a region and are termed invasive. Habitat alteration and invasive species impacts have been the major cause of species extinctions over the past few hundred years, increasing the rate of extinction by about 1,000 percent. Although in the past, many of these losses have gone unrecorded, today, there is an increasing realization of the ecological costs of biological invasion in terms of irretrievable loss of native biodiversity and degradation of ecosystem functioning. While the underlying causes of invasive species threats are significant and global in nature, these threats can be effectively dealt with through collaborative efforts at regional and local levels, especially through prevention, early detection and rapid response.

  6. The parasitic weedC. campestrisis native to North America but has been introduced around the world and become a weed in many countries. It is by far the most important of the dodders, perhaps because of its wide host range. This ensures that there is a wide range of crop seeds that may be...
  7. Abstract,Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, 2015 Invasive alien plant species have threatened the integrity of ecosystems throughout the world. They affect not only the species diversity of native ecosystems but also threaten their biological integrity. In India, a number of...
  8. 5 July 2017 - Removing the flowers of an invasive shrub from mosquito-prone areas might be a simple way to help reduce malaria transmission, according to anew study published in the open access Malaria Journal.Removing the flowers from villages in Mali decreased the local mosquito vector...
  9. Of all the ways that have been tried to control malaria, one of the easiest could also be among the most effective, a new study suggests. Yet the idea of cutting back on the regular food supply of mosquitoes has been neglected, possibly because it just seemed too simple to work. Malaria is...
  10. Malaria Journal 2017 Abstract Background A neglected aspect of alien invasive plant species is their influence on mosquito vector ecology and malaria transmission. Invasive plants that are highly attractive toAnophelesmosquitoes provide them with sugar that is critical to their survival. The...
  11. Abstract, Transactions of the Royal Society of South Africa, 2018 With a few exceptions, comprehensive lists of alien plants that invade natural ecosystems are lacking in sub-Saharan Africa.
