Community seed banks are informal institutions, run and managed by farmers or local and village governments whose primary function is to store seeds for domestic use.

These banks are located in many parts of the world and have existed for many years with the aim of preserving, restoring, strengthening, and improving local seed systems.

In this country the awareness of community members to establish and manage seed banks is limited. These banks were located in a few areas of Dodoma and Mbeya. These banks are known by various names: community seed / gene banks, farmers' seed houses, seed kiosks, seed care groups, seedling or seedling network, community seed bank, seed library, and seeds of society.

Farmers who run community seed banks store seeds of a variety of crops including those grown in large quantities such as maize, rice n.k. They also store the seeds of under-cultivated crops such as sorghum and crops that consumers have abandoned such as yams. These seeds can be stored in small or large quantities depending on the need and availability.
