La transformation implique un changement fondamental qui, dans le contexte de la durabilité, nécessite des changements radicaux et systémiques des valeurs et des croyances, des modèles de comportement social et des régimes de gouvernance et de gestion à pluridimentionnels (Olsson et al. 2014). La transformation a été décrite comme un processus comportant trois phases distinctes : (1) se préparer au changement, (2) Subir et s'accomoder (gérer) à la transition et (3) renforcer la résilience de la nouvelle trajectoire de développement (Olsson et al. 2004). La résilience est la capacité d'un système socio-écologique à absorber ou résister aux perturbations et autres facteurs de stress de sorte que le système demeure dans le même régime, essentiellement en maintenant sa structure et ses fonctions. Il décrit le degré auquel le système est apte à s'auto-organiser, à apprendre et à s'adapter (Holling 1973, Gunderson & Holling 2002, Walker et al . 2004). The Resilience Alliance
