On considère généralement que le lablab est originaire de l’Asie du Sud-est.  Cependant, certains spécialistes sont de l’avis qu’il provient de l’Afrique, où il est connu depuis le huitième siècle.  Le lablab est aujourd’hui cultivé dans l’ensemble des régions tropicales et sous-tropicales.  

Chiang Dao

'Chiang Dao' is a white field lablab with white flowers collected by ECHO asia staff from Chiang Dao district in Thailand.


'Highworth' was introduced to Australia from Southern India. It is an early flowering variety with purple flowers and black seeds produced in non-shattering pods.


'Mix' contains several lablab varieties from ECHO including ''Rongai' (white flowers and light brown seeds), 'Highworth' (purple flowers and dark seeds) and 'White' (white seeds).

Red Hyacinth

'Red Hyacinth'  is a day-neutral lablab that has red stems with large scarlet pods that can be eaten when immature.


'Rongai' is a forage and green manure/cover crop variety with white flowers and light brown, edible seeds.

Ruby Moon

'Ruby Moon' grows on a vigorous vine, with purple to red seed pods and flowers. The seeds, young leaves, and flowers are eaten, and the plant is used as a green manure/cover crop.


'White' is a forage and food variety with large, edible, white seeds.
