Si bien el conocimiento de la forma en que se produce la erosión del suelo y cómo controlarla está firmemente establecido, se necesita más investigación sobre la forma de medir las tasas de pérdida de suelo y el presupuesto de las medidas para reducirlas siguen siendo objeto de debate. De hecho, existe un desacuerdo sobre si la erosión convierte al suelo en una fuente o sumidero de emisiones de carbono, así como fórmulas rivales para evaluar la relación entre el tamaño de las gotas de lluvia y la probabilidad de que desprendan partículas del suelo y las eliminen del paisaje.

Aún así, existe la clara evidencia de que las tasas de erosión del suelo en tierras agrícolas, aradas de manera convencional o en pastizales de pastoreo intensivo, son notablemente mayores que la erosión bajo vegetación nativa y mucho más altas que las tasas de formación del suelo, lo que implica que estamos agotando un recurso no renovable.
