Phaseolus vulgarises una planta anual herbácea de tipo arbustiva (de hábito indeterminado) o enredadera (indeterminado). Los tipos enredadera son perennes y alcanzan los 2-5 m de longitud. El tipo arbustivo es anual y alcanza alturas de 20 a 60 cm. Las hojas pubescentes son trifoliadas, se presentan alternativamente en el tallo y varían de color verde a morado. La inflorescencia puede alcanzar los 15-35 cm de largo y dar flores de color blanco a morado. Las vainas verdes o amarillas alcanzan una longitud de 20 cm, pueden ser rectas o curvas y contienen de 4 a 12 semillas cada una. Las semillas tienen forma de riñón y pueden ser de muchos colores: blanco, rojo, verde, marrón, morado, negro o moteado.
