Stylosanthes guianensis es una leguminosa perenne, de corta vida y porte erecto. En la madurez, el cultivo es un arbusto de porte bajo con una raíz primaria profunda y varios tallos.  Las hojas son trifoliadas, y la inflorescencia es en espigas con flores de color amarillo a naranja. Las flores dan origen a vainas de una semilla, de 2 a 3 cm de largo, que contiene semillas pequeñas de color marrón a violeta.
