The author hopes that this study will contribute to understanding of the land situation around Lake Bazega, which is causing concern among both local actors and the administrative authorities in the province. W found that there are different modes of access to land under customary rights:  gifts, contracts with shared land capital and recognized or presumed sales.  Actors then have three options for mormalizing the rights thus acquired, through state, perfectorl or informal procedures.  Each system has its own strengths and weaknesse, and each offers  a degree of security.  However, mutual ignorance or even competition between the different systems could itself constitutee an additional factor of insecurity.
