The production of this textbook was sponsored by Winrock International, FORSPA, ADB, UNDP and FAO, and it is targetted towards students and practitioners of forestry, agroforestry and sustainable land use. The book discusses in detail various aspects of nitrogen fixing trees (NFTs), including species selection, plant inoculation, growth characteristics, cultivation practices and potential uses. It lists tree species that are currently recognized to fix nitrogen, and points to areas where further research is needed. Information is provided on successful management strategies for soil improvement. The book is arranged in 3 parts: 1. NFTs - an objective assessment - 5 chapters giving an introduction, and discussing nitrogen fixation in trees, the management of nitrogen fixation, capturing the benefits of nitrogen fixing trees, and selecting species; 2. Descriptions of NFT species - one chapter of 112 pages giving descriptions of the 40 species of greatest economic or ecological significance, and tables showing NFT species suited to the various Köppen climatic classes; and 3. Supplemental tables and tools for ready reference - including a protocol for determining the need to inoculate NFTs, pre-germination treatments for NFTs, methods of inoculation, a list of nitrogen fixing trees, and reported wood yields of priority NFTs.
