Fisheries and Development in Tanzania examines the practical economics of fisheries in the context of a developing country, and presents the results of a comprehensive survey of the Tanzanian fisheries sector.  It argues that small-scale wind-powered or paddled craft, rather than large modern trawlers, are the most efficient technique.  Policies are suggested that will enable poor households to expand fishing activities and improve the access of women while maintaining the environment that supports fish stocks.  This carefully documented study is a valuable contribution to discussion of the Tanzanian economy.
