Proyek Kebun Sekolah Membawa Harapan bagi Siswa-Siswa Pengungsi 2016-02-09

Klub kebun sekolah dasar di Sekolah Internasional Dalat di Penang, Malaysia, mengulurkan bantuan bagi para pengungsi Rohingya dari Myanmar. Klub ini mengadakan pertemuan sekali seminggu untuk mempelajari tentang praktik-praktik berkebun yang baik dan prinsip di balik hidroponik. Para siswa tengah mengerjakan sebuah unit hidroponik portabel kecil yang mereka gunakan untuk menanam dua jenis bayam: bayam lokal dan bayam Brasil, dan kedua-keduanya tumbuh dengan baik.

Melalui instruktur mereka, Lisa Munson, para siswa telah memberikan dukungan untuk berbagi perangkat hidroponik ini dengan sebuah sekolah pengungsi di Penang sebagai cara untuk membantu siswa-siswa yang berada di sana. Para siswa juga berbagi pengetahuan yang mereka dapatkan mengenai berkebun dan pelestariannya dari eksplorasi langsung yang mereka lakukan.

Garden at Dalat International SchoolSebagian besar tanaman di sekolah pengungsi tumbuh dengan baik dan para siswa diberikan tugas untuk merawat tanaman-tanaman ini. Hal ini telah menjadi sebuah peluang yang positif bagi mereka. Meski demikian, karena adanya berbagai masalah yang melingkupi situasi para pengungsi, semua tanaman harus ditanam di balik pintu-pintu yang terkunci; sebab ada kemungkinan bahwa tanaman-tanaman ini akan dicuri apabila ditanam di luar. Kondisi di dalam ruangan telah menyebabkan beberapa tanaman mati, tetapi kelor, selasih, dan bayam tetap tumbuh dengan baik.
