La vermicultura o lombricultura es una técnica útil para reciclar los desechos de la cocina y el ganado en un fertilizante orgánico rico, para producir alimentos con alto contenido de proteínas para las aves de corral e iniciar un lucrativo negocio de venta de lombrices y vermicompostaje para la pequeña granja. Las lombrices son socios invaluables en la generación de tierra en su huerto, ya sea un huerto de cocina, de patio o un gran huerto.

En el huerto, un suelo sano es esencial para la producción de cultivos sanos, y un suelo sano requiere una buena cantidad de materia orgánica. La materia orgánica se puede agregar al suelo de varias fuentes (ver Notas técnicas de ECHO, compost y mantillo para suelos saludables, cultivos de cobertura de abono verde y fertilidad del suelo). Está compuesto esencialmente por desechos vegetales y animales descompuestos, y estos desechos son ideales para alimentar y mantener la parte “viva” o biológica del suelo y darle una buena “salud.”
