The purpose of this book is to express as meaningfully as possible and in as many instances as are appropriate those underlying assumptions and principles which give the land-grand institutions their vitality, to explain and discuss the general structure which seems to have best promoted these underlying assumptions and principles, and to provide a reservoir of detailed and factual information about the internal organization and functioning of such a university, from which may spring ideas and answers about what to do and what not to do.
