The case studies in this collection highlight the value and benefits of pastoralism to the economy, the environment, and the culture of Africa. They demonstrate pastoralists’ essential role in land governance and their contribution to Africa’s sustainable development.
Pastoralists live in the harshest arid and semi-arid areas and produce food where no rain-fed crops can grow. They contribute significantly to the economy, producing meat, milk, eggs and non-food products such as hides, fibre and wool.
We need to recognise, value and support this productive, adaptive and sustainable livestock industry at the heart of African food systems.
