A careful evaluation of the Africa experience in the final phase of this five-year programme showed that there was a need for catalytic interventions which would lead to an enabling environment for women to have easier access to technologies.  This would be an environment where women producers can obtain information on the available technologies, have the capacity to analyses such information and make technological choices on their own, as well as the capacity to acquire credit and training to enable their purchase and operation of the technology of their choice.  This UNIFEM source book series aims to facilitate the building of such an environment.
