The main types of agroforests are described; tree homegardens, village forest gardens, "jardins de case", multipurpose woodlots, agroforestry buffer zones as well as some lesser known types of agroforests. These descriptions lead to a broad definition of agroforests. Looking at the application domains of agroforest, susistence production seems to be thier main atrribute even though they can also be managed for commercial purposes. Provided their establishment is well understood, agroforests can be recommended for most agro-ecological zones and can make a signficant contriubtion to the sustainability of farming systems. Agroforests have not been well research and a result of their complex nature, research should be guided by the principles of frest ecology, preferably in an on-farm context.
