Session: Securing the long-term health of Northern Tanzania’s rangelands is critical for both biodiversity conservation and human development initiatives. Threatened by climate change and overburdened resource use, the future of pastoralist communities whose livestock depend on healthy pastures is particularly at risk. Improved local monitoring and management of the rangelands can help ensure the long-term sustainability of the grasslands while helping people to adapt to the impacts of climate change. Tanzania People & Wildlife is working with different communities across Northern Tanzania to merge traditional knowledge with modern science and technology. A community rangeland monitoring tool helps local people to access real time data on the status of their rangelands throughout the year. Results of this approach have led to improved decision making and increased communal management and protection of grazing areas in Northern Tanzania.
