Niger (Guizotia abyssinica (L.F., Compositae) is an oilseed crop cultivated in Ethiopia and India.  It constitutes about 50% of Ethiopian and 3% of Indian oilseed production.  In Ethiopia, it is cultivated on waterlogged soils where most crops and all other oilseeds fail to grow and contributes a great deal to soil conservation and land rehabilitation.  In this monograph the major germplasm characterizations and evaluations at Holetta, Ethiopia and Jabalpur, India are summarized. Available recent literature on niger genetic resources is reviewed, and the prospects and constraints of niger production are indicated.
