Soil fertility is the overriding constraint to food production in the tropics, and yet in many developing countries fertilizers are unavailable or beyond the reach of subsistence farmers. The biological fixation of atmospheric nitrogen is the only way that plants can manufacture their own fertilizer and is the main input of nitrogen in many tropical cropping systems.

  1. Calliandra is a vigorous, nitrogen-fixing, bushy tree that can be fast-growing on poor soils. The tree responds well to coppicing, is a good fuelwood source and the leaves provide excellent fodder. Calliandra is used to enrich soil and provide stability on steep slopes.
  2. Gliricidia is a fast-growingnitrogen-fixing tree that grows up to 15m in height. It is used for living fences, green manure, fodder, honey production, wind breaks, and fuelwood. This tree tolerates dry, acid, alkaline, and salty soils and was traditionally grown to shade cocoa trees.
  3. The genus Leucaena includes several multipurpose tree species and interspecific hybrids that can withstand almost any type or frequency of pruning or coppicing. They are native to Mexico and Central America, and now abundant in the Philippines, West Africa, Nepal, Australia and Hawaii. Spanish...
  4. Common nitrogen fixing trees for fodder production summarized by mean annual rainfall and mean annual temperature.
  5. Nitrogen fixing trees (NFTs) are special in their potential for agroforestry planting. Through nitrogen fixation, this critical soil nutrient is extracted from the atmosphere and converted to a form usable by plants. The trees don’t perform this process but instead this is done by symbiotic soil...
  6. NFTA 89-02, May 1989 A quick guide to useful nitrogen fixing trees from around the world Of Australia’s tropical area, almost 2 million km2receives less than 500 mm of rainfall annually. Soils are diverse, but typically low in plant nutrients, with widespread and severe deficiencies in phosphorus...
  7. FACT sheets on multipurpose trees.Aimed at extension agents, field researchers, community leaders, and farmers, these two-page summaries of current information are a handy reference for introducing promising multipurpose trees into research and planting programs. All FACT sheets are available in...
  8. 1994/01/01 This workshop's objectives were to enhance the knowledge of scientists and practitioners concerned with the use and management of Dalberia species by exchanging information and documenting research findings, to increase the use of Dalbergia species by providing extension agents, development...
  9. 1988/01/01 This document is a compendium of existing knowledge on the characteristics, silviculture, plantation techniques, growth rates and utilization of nitrogen fixing trees for different types of wasteland. It is organized as a set of tables designed to help the user first determine what species might...
  10. 1987/01/01 Agroforestry systems using nitrogen fixing woody perennials, such as Leucaena Leucocephala and Gliricidia sepium, planted in contour hedges on hillsides (or alleys on level ground), have proven to be as inexpensive and effective technology to control soil erosion, improve soil structure, and...
  11. 1984/01/01 This book highlights eighteen species of casuarina, a group of underexploited Australasian trees that could have exceptional potential in reforesting difficult terrain in many parts of the world. https://nap.nationalacademies.org/download/19415
  12. 1991/01/01 Black locust is a fast growing, nitrogen fixing, stress tolerant species with durable and high quality wood which can be used for many purposes, including wall paneling, flooring, fence posts, vine props, furniture, fruit boxes, pulp and paper, animal feed stock, bee forage, and biomass energy.
  13. 1993/01/01 In recent years, scientists and development specialist have discovered many previously neglected nitrogen-fixing trees with exciting potential to sustain and improve the oil, enhance crop production and provide valuable products. Prominent among the trees attracting increasing attention is the...
  14. 1985/01/01 This manual is a guide to the production and use of leucaena primarily as a forage crop. A companion publication discusses the production of leucaena for wood and other uses.
  15. 1987/01/01 The objectives of this workshop were to encourage communication among researchers, assess the state-of-the-art knowledge about its genetic improvement, management and use, identify research priorities, initiate collaborative research through networkingand promote research funding, and to prepare...
  16. 1997/01/01 Thirty-nine participants from 14 countries shared their research and observations on Calliandra species. Most of the papers they presented are published in this proceedings volume.
  17. 1989/01/01 Nitrogen Fixing Trees can be grown on farms in a number of ways ranging from scattered trees to plantations. Production and use of Gliricidia sepium is presented in this manual from experiences around the world. It is hoped that extension personnel, progressive farmers and organizations engaged...
  18. 1991/01/01 Soil fertility is the overriding constraint to food production in the tropics, and yet in many developing countries fertilizers are unavailable or beyond the reach of subsistence farmers. The biological fixation of atmospheric nitrogen is the only way that plants can manufacture their own...
  19. 1998/01/01 Fodder scarcity is a major constraint faced by farming communities throughout the world. This is often the result of the degradation of traditional fodder sources in forest and village common lands. Consequently, to meet their needs, farmers must produce at least some fodder in their agricultural...
  20. 1986/01/01 13 pages, illustrated, photos
  21. 1994/01/19 The production of this textbook was sponsored by Winrock International, FORSPA, ADB, UNDP and FAO, and it is targetted towards students and practitioners of forestry, agroforestry and sustainable land use.
