This training gives a broad overview and introduction to some basic soil characteristics: phases (solid, liquid, gas), texture, density, structure, reaction (pH), plant-water relationships, organic matter, and nutrients. This video discusses the chemical makeup of soil, ions, pH.

Special thanks to Dr. Landon Darilek for giving this presentation at the ECHO Asia Small Farm Resource Center in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 24 July 2020.

Video highlights include:

00:00 Nutrient concentration of soil terminology

06:15 Essential elements needed for plant health

11:00 Liebig's Law of Minimum

14:19 Example: Barrel of elements

23:38 Discussion of where plant nutrients come from

35:14 Example: The "Mingle" Game (starring the ECHO Asia staff!) demonstrating how the plant takes up the elements/nutrients in needs!
