Abstract, Tree Planters' Notes

Damping-off is a disease of germinating and newly emerged conifer and hardwood seedlings that causes decay of succulent tissue, wilting, and seedling mortality. Many species of pathogenic fungi can cause damping-off. Some of the factors influencing damping-off include pathogen populations, host susceptibility, and soil temperature, moisture, and pH. The severity of damping-off can vary from field to field and year to year depending on these factors. Managers can reduce damping-off losses in nursery beds with an integrated program of cultural and chemical practices.
