This presentation defines agroforestry, describes its potenial to allieve major land use problems and indicates what type of interactions can be expected between its various components. The basic concepts of Multipurpose Trees and Shrubs, multidisciplinarity and sustainability are explained and agroforestry is analyzed from a systems perspective. The presentation further describes the main agroforestry technologies and provides possible frameworks for their classification, including, one using structural criteria to divide technologies into crops under tree cover, animal production under tree cover, agroforests, agrofrestry technologies with a linear arrangement, sequential agroforestry technologies and other technologies. The notion of an agroforestry 'continuum' is discussed as a conclusion.
